A useful fit for

A fit for a user who wants three manually selected heat levels, separate fan-only airflow, a touchscreen thermostat and a base that can be aimed by hand while the heater stays on the floor. The 1–12-hour control is an auto-off countdown, not a delayed start.

The main tradeoff

The swivel base must be repositioned by hand; it is not powered oscillation. The model is floor-only, requires three feet of space around the heater from nearby objects, and is not documented for bathroom or unattended use. Vornado does not publish per-level wattage, a thermostat setting range, an independent coverage test, or a finish name for the single default variant. The guide warns that the front grille is hot even though the case is described as cool-touch.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Would you rather aim the whole heater by hand than have it sweep automatically?

The exact guide calls the base a manual swivel base. It can be turned by hand to re-aim the outlet, but the product page and guide do not document powered oscillation.

Do you want fan-only air movement and at least three selectable heat levels?

The exact guide lists High Heat, Medium Heat, Low Heat and Fan Only. Fan-only moves room air; it does not cool the room.

Explore this need in the finder →
Is an automatic shutoff countdown of at least eight hours useful for an attended session?

The guide provides a user-set one-to-twelve-hour auto-off timer. It does not provide a delayed start, and the manufacturer still advises turning the heater off when leaving or sleeping.

Can you use a floor-only heater rather than a desk or shelf model?

The exact guide says this heater is for floor use only and must remain upright on a stable surface. It does not permit desktop or shelf placement.

The Vornado Velocity Cube 5S Whole Room Heater with Swivel Base (SKU EH1-0212-43) is a compact, fan-forced electric heater whose distinctive adjustment is manual: turn the base by hand to point the outlet where you want it. It combines three heat settings, a separate Fan Only mode, temperature adjustment and an onboard 1–12-hour shutoff countdown. Its owner guide is unusually clear about the tradeoff for that cube-sized floor footprint: this is a floor-only, attended-use heater that needs substantial space around it.

Manual aiming, not a powered sweep

The linked Owner’s Guide labels the base a “manual swivel base.” That lets you redirect the outlet without lifting the appliance, but it is not powered oscillation. The 5S page and guide do not document an automatic sweep or angle. For powered movement and a remote, compare the distinct Velocity Cube 5 OSC. Choose this 5S when you would rather aim it by hand and leave it there.

Vornado markets the 5S as a whole-room model, but its materials provide no independent heating-rate test or square-foot result. Treat “whole room” as the maker’s intended airflow, not a tested coverage promise or proof it can replace central heat. It is fan-forced, not a radiant panel or fanless heater.

Three heat levels and air without heat

The mode control lists High, Medium and Low heat plus Fan Only. That is more choice than a two-level personal heater and useful if you sometimes want air movement without adding heat. Fan Only moves the air already in the room; it cannot cool the space. Vornado lists a maximum input of 1,500 watts at 120 volts and 60 hertz, but does not publish the separate wattage of the three heat levels. If your electrical plan depends on a specific Low or Medium draw, the available listing does not answer that question.

The touch controls also adjust a thermostat setting. The guide says to use plus and minus to choose a desired temperature, but does not give a Fahrenheit range or explain how the setpoint interacts with each heat level. Treat it as an everyday control, not a documented heat-stage schedule or a room-coverage measurement.

A timer with limits

The built-in timer is an auto-off countdown from one to twelve hours in one-hour steps; no delayed start is documented. After you press Power, a separate roughly 20-second Fan Only cycle clears residual heat; it is not a schedule. Nighttime mode dims the display and the control lock prevents accidental changes, but Vornado still says to turn heaters off when leaving or going to sleep. The timer and dim display are not permission for unattended operation.

Check the placement before the footprint

The listing gives body dimensions of 8.72 inches deep by 8.90 inches wide by 9.87 inches high, weight of 6.44 pounds and a six-foot cord. The guide still says floor use only, upright, on a stable, level surface—not on a crowded desktop or shelf. Keep it at least three feet from furniture, bedding, curtains, clothing, paper and other items that might burn. Keep intake and outlet clear, and keep the cord out from under rugs and walkways.

Use a direct grounded wall outlet. Vornado bars extension cords, power strips, surge protectors, smart plugs and external timers. The guide says GFCI outlets are not recommended because they may trip; it does not call them a permitted workaround for damp spaces. It also rules out bathrooms, laundry areas and similar damp locations or placement near water. The outer case is described as cool-touch, but the front grille is hot during use and cooldown. Tip-over and blocked-airflow shutdowns are safeguards, not a replacement for clear space and supervision.

Cleaning and reset are part of ownership

Because the fan moves air, Vornado recommends regular dust removal. The guide says to unplug the heater, vacuum dust from the front and rear grilles with a brush attachment, and wipe the exterior with a soft dry cloth. If blocked airflow trips the safety shutoff, its reset sequence is to turn the unit off, unplug it, clear the obstruction, wait five to ten minutes and restart. Repeated shutdowns call for Vornado service rather than opening the housing. The guide provides a five-year warranty; its listing does not establish an independent durability test.

Who should consider it?

Choose the 5S if a floor-standing heater with three heat levels, fan-only air movement, a manual swivel base and a built-in off countdown fits your attended routine—and you can honor the full clearance. It may suit someone who wants to aim one fixed stream across a room and then leave that direction in place. Skip it if you require powered horizontal oscillation, confirmed remote inclusion, a specific per-setting wattage, a published temperature range, tabletop use, bathroom placement or unattended heating. Those features and uses are not confirmed for this listing.

It is also distinct from the similar-sounding Velocity Cube 5 OSC: the 5S guide describes a hand-swiveled base, while the OSC model’s materials describe powered movement and remote operation. If the main need is a smaller heater for a spot beside a desk or at your feet, read the separate Vornado VH204 assessment; its listing describes personal use and two heat levels, but it is not the same whole-room configuration. For the 5S’s exact controls and placement restrictions, see the Vornado product listing and its directly linked Velocity Cube 5S Owner’s Guide.
