A useful fit for

An attended, indoor desk or nearby-foot personal-heating routine where a simple High/Low selector and separate Fan Only airflow are useful and the intake/outlet can remain open.

The main tradeoff

Vornado does not publish VH204-specific input wattage, dimensions, weight, numerical clearances or independent coverage results. There is no adjustable thermostat, timer, remote or app control. Retail identity says VH204 while directly linked support documents say VH204+; the exact SKU crosswalk remains open. Only Black was available in the dated native snapshot.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Would you rather warm one nearby desk or tabletop spot than heat an entire room?

The current page describes VH204 for desktop/tabletop use and as personal-space heat. A separate under-desk plan is possible only with a clear, unobstructed air path; no tested coverage area or numeric footprint is published.

Are two manual heat levels and a separate Fan Only mode enough for your nearby routine?

Vornado lists High, Low and Fan Only positions. Fan Only moves air without heat; the product does not document selectable fan-speed patterns, a thermostat or automatic temperature control.

Is a strict maximum wattage cap essential before you can shortlist a heater?

The VH204 page gives a vague relative “half the energy” claim but no exact wattage for this SKU or heat setting. A strict numeric ceiling cannot be verified from those materials, so a hard cap should leave this model out until the manufacturer supplies exact input data.

Do you require the heat to cycle automatically around a selected room temperature?

The page-linked controls show High, Low and Fan Only but no thermostat control. If a thermostat is essential, select a documented thermostat requirement and compare a different model.

Can you keep the heater attended and turn it off before leaving or sleeping?

Vornado describes its portable heaters as attended, short-term devices. Its safety FAQ says to switch the heater off when leaving or sleeping; tip-over and blocked-airflow cutoffs are not permission for unattended use.

The Vornado VH204 is a compact personal heater for a nearby desk, tabletop or attended under-desk spot—not a thermostat-controlled room heater. Its current U.S. listing documents two heat settings and a separate Fan Only position, with an integrated carry handle, cool-touch case and tip-over/blocked-airflow shutoffs. The product page does not publish wattage, body dimensions, weight, room-size performance or numeric operating clearances, so it is difficult to qualify for a strict power or footprint limit. If you want a simple warm-air stream beside an occupied work or reading spot and can keep its path clear, those limits may matter less than the small personal-use format.

A personal zone, not a room-temperature promise

Vornado describes the VH204 as personal-area heat for desktop, tabletop and under-desk use, and suggests placing it on a desk or at your feet. The shape and forward grille suit a person close to the appliance: warm air can be aimed toward a seated spot rather than distributed by a documented oscillating sweep. That is a placement suggestion, not a tested coverage radius. The page uses “vortex” and circulation language but reports no independent heating-rate, temperature-rise or room-area result. Do not treat a personal heater as a replacement for the home's normal heat or as evidence that an entire room will reach a chosen temperature.

Fit also needs a practical check. “Compact” and “minimal footprint” are not dimensions, and the manufacturer provides no axis-by-axis body size or clearance table here. Measure the desk or floor area you actually have, then leave the inlet and outlet open as the guide directs. Under a desk, the warm-air route must not be boxed in by the desktop, a footrest, bags or fabric. If the available location is cramped enough that the airflow would be blocked, choose another arrangement instead of depending on the automatic cutoff.

Two heat levels, plus air without heat

The power and mode switches are intentionally basic. Select High Heat, Low Heat or Fan Only; the separate Fan Only position circulates room air without heating it. It is not air conditioning, and the documents do not give a fan-speed count. This is a useful difference from a heater with only High/Low heat, but the listing does not provide an exact wattage for either heat level. A marketing line says it uses “half the energy” of a full-size heater without identifying the comparison or giving an input table for this model. For that reason, a 300-, 500- or 750-watt cap cannot be checked from the reviewed exact product data. Do not borrow wattage figures from a neighboring Vornado model.

The controls do not include a room thermostat, countdown timer, remote or app in the exact page and linked control diagram. The selected heat level is therefore not a set-temperature target that cycles automatically. If you need temperature regulation, timed shutoff, remote operation or heat for a broader area, shortlist a different model whose exact page and instructions document those controls. VH204 is the straightforward choice only when manual selection is acceptable.

Keep the air path and power connection safe

The linked Use & Care guide documents a cutoff if airflow is blocked and a tip-over switch that cuts power when the heater tilts more than 10 degrees. Vornado also describes the case as cool-touch. Those are safety features, not permission to leave the heater running alone, crowd it with belongings or treat it as child-proof. Vornado's current heater guidance calls for attended, short-term use, turning the appliance off when leaving or sleeping, and plugging it directly into a suitable wall outlet. The company says not to add an extension cord, power strip, surge protector, timer, multi-outlet adapter or smart plug. Keep it in a dry indoor location and away from bathrooms and water.

There is a useful reset routine if the safety system trips: switch the heater off, unplug it, clear the blockage, wait five to ten minutes for cooling, then reconnect and restart it. If it shuts off repeatedly or fails to reset, stop and contact Vornado rather than repeatedly cycling it. For routine care, the guide recommends weekly cleaning with the heater unplugged: vacuum dust from the side inlets and front outlet grille with a brush attachment, then wipe the exterior with a soft dry cloth. It also recommends periodic internal dust removal with pressurized air. A portable fan heater needs that small maintenance habit because it draws room air through its grilles.

Which version and what alternative?

The current listing groups three finish-only variants: Ivy, Alabaster and Black. Its dated native record showed Black available while Ivy and Alabaster were unavailable; that is a snapshot, not a promise about today's stock. Their exact SKUs are EH1-0224-141 (Ivy), EH1-0224-140 (Alabaster) and EH1-0224-06 (Black). The archived main images show a green, white and black compact fan-heater body respectively. They look like polished studio renderings, although Vornado does not state how the images were made.

If an adjustable thermostat is essential, the Vornado VH10 is a more relevant comparison because its current page documents a mechanical thermostat; it is a whole-room floor unit, not the same personal desk format, and it does not document Fan Only. If a separate fan mode matters but you also want a broader floor-heater feature set, compare exact models with those features stated rather than assuming VH204 has them. Finally, the current product page names the retail model VH204, while both PDFs linked from it identify “VH204+.” I found no manufacturer SKU or revision crosswalk for the added plus, so this review preserves the retail model and leaves that paperwork identity bridge open. The product page advertises a three-year satisfaction promise, while the guide's generic warranty paragraph refers to a “Whole Room Heater”; check the terms for the exact unit before relying on the label. See Vornado's current VH204 listing, its linked Use & Care guide and Product Support sheet.
