A useful fit for

A fit for an indoor room where a compact floor heater can sit on a stable, clear surface, with a direct household outlet and space around it. It combines three heat outputs and ECO control with a separate fan-only mode, automatic 70° horizontal swing and manual vertical tilt.

The main tradeoff

The 60° vertical aim is manual rather than automatic up-and-down oscillation, and the horizontal arc is fixed at the listed 70°. DREO does not document a numeric stand-off clearance in the US manual or app control here; the 14 × 11.2 × 7.6-inch body is not a clearance envelope. Coverage, airflow, heating distance and noise figures remain manufacturer claims, not independent room measurements.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can I manually point the outlet up or down?

Yes. DREO lists a 60° manual vertical tilt. It does not replace the heater's separate 70° powered horizontal swing.

Does the heater provide at least 70° of automatic horizontal swing?

Yes. DREO lists 70° horizontal oscillation; the vertical adjustment is manual, not motorized.

Explore this need in the finder →
Will the published 14-inch body fit under a 15-inch height cap?

The manufacturer lists 14 inches of body height, so it meets that cap. This does not include any operating clearance.

Can the 517 move air when heat is not wanted?

Yes. The manual lists three fan-only speeds. Heating itself is fan-forced, not fanless convection.

The DREO Whole-Room Heater 517 is a compact, fan-forced PTC heater for indoor floor placement. The U.S. support page identifies the standard model as DR-HSH037. DREO's native listing presents White SKU 10-040371-005 and Black SKU 10-040371-003 as finish variants; the dated collection snapshot marked White available and Black unavailable. The differences below apply to the heater model, while the photograph shows the Black finish.

Horizontal swing, manual vertical aim

The key distinction is how its head moves. A motor swings the outlet 70 degrees horizontally. You can also tilt the outlet through a 60-degree vertical range by hand, but this is not automatic up-and-down oscillation. If you want to move a warm-air stream across a chair or work area while aiming it higher or lower when you set the heater down, that split can be useful. If the heater must continuously sweep both side-to-side and up-and-down without intervention, the 714 or 715 is the closer DREO family; the 714 manual gives selectable arcs on both axes. The fixed 360-degree outlet on the 725 is another distinct arrangement, not a substitute for either type of movement.

The product page calls out a 342.55 CFM airflow figure, an 11-foot heating distance and 160–270-square-foot coverage. Those are manufacturer claims rather than measurements from this review, and they cannot predict how evenly a particular room warms. A drafty doorway, tall ceiling, insulation and heating system matter. This assessment is document-based, not a room test.

Three heat levels, ECO and fan-only operation

The U.S. DR-HSH037 manual rates the unit at 1,500 watts on 120V, 60Hz and lists 900-, 1,300- and 1,500-watt heat steps. ECO mode accepts a 41–95°F setpoint in one-degree increments and compares it with the sensed room temperature; heating stops at the target and resumes at a lower or higher setting according to the temperature gap. The thermostat is a control plan, not a promise that an undersized or open room will reach that number.

There is a separate fan-only mode with three fan speeds, so the appliance can move existing air when heat is not wanted. That does not make its heating fanless: during heating it uses forced airflow. If still-air warmth is essential, compare the Convection Heater 711 or wall-mounted 711S instead. If you want finer everyday fan patterns, the MC706 documents many more speeds and named modes; if a broad 360-degree heated outlet matters, compare the 720 or 725, keeping their different documentation limits in mind.

Plan the body fit and operating space separately

DREO publishes a body size of 14 inches high by 11.2 inches wide by 7.6 inches deep. That makes it easier to check against a shelf-side footprint or storage space than a model with no published dimensions, but these numbers describe the heater alone. The U.S. manual calls for a stable, level surface, a dry indoor location and separation from combustible material; it does not provide a numeric clearance that can be derived from the product photo. Leave an open operating area, keep fabric and paper away, and follow the full instructions for the exact unit.

The front can become hot while operating. The manual includes tip-over and overheat protections, but those safeguards do not make a narrow walkway, bedding edge or unattended heater a suitable location. Use a powered household outlet and stop if the plug, cord or receptacle becomes unusually hot or damaged. The manual warns against immersion and water entering the heater, and says to store it in a cool, dry area. Before placing it near furniture, measure both the body and the space that must stay clear.

Timer, remote and upkeep

The remote is included with two AAA batteries. The 0–12-hour countdown is an auto-off timer for a running heater, not a delayed start. The manual also describes a 24-hour continuous-run shutoff that is disabled by default. After you switch the heater off, its fan continues for 30 seconds to cool the heating assembly; the timer does not persist through a power interruption. A child lock prevents accidental control changes, and the display goes dark after a period of inactivity.

Phone-app control is not established in the product page or manual inspected here, so do not shortlist the 517 for an essential app routine. For care, switch it off, unplug it and let it cool. Wipe the housing with a soft dry cloth and remove dust around the intake with a dry cloth or swab. Do not spray cleaner into the vents, immerse the heater or open it for internal cleaning; use DREO's authorized service channel if it needs repair.

Who should shortlist it?

Consider the Whole-Room Heater 517 if you want a movable fan heater with documented dimensions, a separate fan-only mode, a modest horizontal sweep and the ability to aim the outlet vertically by hand. Choose a model with powered two-axis movement if the outlet must sweep up and down on its own, or a fanless convection panel if any blower airflow is unwanted. Its listed size, wattage and control features can help answer fit questions, but they do not replace the manual's safety directions or prove a room-size result.

This assessment covers U.S. model DR-HSH037 and the identified finish variants. Manufacturer noise, airflow, heating-distance and coverage figures are not independently verified here. Confirm the model number on the unit and use the exact manual supplied with it before operation.
