A useful fit for

A possible fit for a dry indoor room where a securely wall-mounted fan heater, fan-only airflow and app/remote controls are useful, and drilling plus the exact installation clearances are acceptable. The manual requires wall installation; this is not a floor-standing portable heater.

The main tradeoff

The standard WH517S manual expressly rules out bathroom, laundry and similar wet locations, even though DREO separately lists a 517AS product with an ALCI plug. The on-unit timer is an auto-off countdown, not a documented delayed start. DREO's advertised 30-degree 'manual outlet tilt' conflicts with the manual's warning not to move the fin by hand, and the manual does not document an automatic oscillation arc. The 517S also needs clear wall space and drilling; the available sources do not give body dimensions.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Must the heater be fixed to the wall rather than standing on the floor?

Yes. The WH517S manual says the heater must be properly installed on a wall and warns not to prop it up or use it with the grille vertical.

Explore this need in the finder →
Do you need a separate fan-only mode when heat is not wanted?

Yes. DREO lists a Fan Only mode and the WH517S manual shows a separate fan-only selection; the documents do not list a number of fan-only speeds.

Explore this need in the finder →
Is phone-app control essential?

Yes. The exact WH517S manual documents connecting the heater to the DREO app; voice-assistant access requires a DREO account.

Must the exact manual permit installation in a bathroom?

No. The WH517S manual says it is not intended for bathrooms, laundry areas or similar locations; the 517AS is a separate listing and does not override this model's instruction.

The DREO Smart Wall-mounted Heater 517S is a fixed indoor fan heater, not a portable version of DREO’s round Whole-Room Heater 517. The US product listing calls it WH517S; its matching English manual identifies model DR-HSH017S and rates it at 1,500 watts, 120 volts and 60 hertz. The native US listing groups White SKU 10-04017-111 and Black SKU 10-040171-001 as finishes. Both were marked available in the observed collection snapshot. That distinction matters: “517S” is the wall-mounted fan heater; “Whole-Room Heater 517” is a separate floor unit with a different model number and controls.

A wall heater only if the wall and clearances work

The manual requires the WH517S to be properly mounted to a wall before use. It says not to prop the heater against an object or operate it with the grille vertical. The illustrated mounting guide marks more than one foot above and below the unit and more than 0.65 foot at each side. Elsewhere, the safety section calls for combustibles to stay at least three feet in front and away from the sides and rear. These are not measurements of the heater body; measure the actual wall and surrounding furniture, and follow the full instructions rather than treating the small panel as a small clearance envelope.

Installation involves drilling and fastening anchors; the manual labels its wall-anchor steps “only for drywall.” It is not a good match if you need to roll a heater between rooms, do not want to drill, cannot reach a suitable outlet with the installed cord, or cannot leave the stated open space. DREO does not publish body dimensions or weight in the materials used here, so a tight wall alcove or a dimension-limited purchase needs more information before ordering.

Three heat levels, a thermostat and a separate fan mode

The controls are more than an on/off switch. The manual lists power-heat levels of 900, 1,300 and 1,500 watts, an ECO set temperature from 41°F through 95°F in one-degree steps, and Fan Only mode. ECO changes between low and high heat as the sensed room temperature moves relative to the setpoint, then stops at the target. That thermostat behavior can reduce repeated manual adjustments, but it cannot guarantee a temperature throughout a drafty or poorly insulated room. The listing does not support treating a manufacturer coverage figure as a promise for your particular layout.

Fan Only is a useful distinction from DREO’s fanless wall-mounted Convection Heater 711S. The 517S can move air without heating; the 711S is a different choice for someone who wants convection heat without fan airflow. The WH517S manual does not give a number of Fan Only speeds, so this assessment does not claim one or treat it as a multi-speed summer room fan. Its heating also depends on moving air, unlike the 711S panel.

Timer and app are separate from the outlet-angle claim

The WH517S’s on-unit timer is a one-to-24-hour countdown that switches off a heater already running. It is not a documented off-to-on countdown. The manual separately says that the DREO app can activate a schedule, but it does not explain that schedule’s start behavior in enough detail to promise a delayed start. If a timed start is essential, the 711S manual documents that function more clearly; do not infer it from the 517S auto-off timer or the word “smart.” The manual documents app connection and a remote in the box. It says voice assistants require a DREO account. The remote battery type is CR2025, but the material does not say whether a battery is supplied.

There is an important mismatch in DREO’s wording about direction. The product page advertises a “30° Manual Outlet Tilt,” while the exact WH517S manual warns that moving the outlet fin manually can cause malfunction or fire and says to change the blowing angle with the control panel, remote or app. Those statements do not explain how the advertised angle is adjusted. Do not treat it as a hand-moved fin, a selectable 30-degree oscillation, or automatic up-and-down movement. If your decision depends on aiming or sweeping the outlet, that ambiguity is a reason to choose a model with a clearly documented mechanism instead.

Not the bathroom model

The exact WH517S manual says this heater is not intended for bathrooms, laundry areas or similar locations. DREO lists a separate 517AS product with an ALCI plug, but that is not the White/Black 517S row, and its separate manual and use restrictions should be checked independently. An ALCI label or a neighboring product page does not cancel the WH517S manual’s location warning. For a bathroom, do not choose this model.

Who should shortlist it—and what changes the answer

Consider the 517S when you want supplemental heat attached to a dry indoor wall, prefer fan-forced warmth, value app or remote control, and can install it with the specified mounting and clearances. In the finder, an essential wall-mount requirement and a separate fan-only requirement can include it; fanless heat, floor portability or documented delayed start do not. A bathroom requirement excludes it. A strict vertical-aim or oscillation need also should not be satisfied by the conflicting tilt wording. Unknown body dimensions will not pass a hard size cap.

If you want fanless, app-controlled wall heat, compare the Convection Heater 711S and its distinct manual and clearances. If moving the heater is more important than keeping the floor clear, a portable model such as the Whole-Room Heater 517 has an entirely different setup. This is a manual-and-product-page assessment, not a hands-on test: no independent room-heating, sound or energy measurement is claimed. Before mounting or operating it, read the DREO WH517S listing alongside the WH517S user manual and verify the model printed on the heater.
