A useful fit for

Fits a dry indoor floor location when you want the exact family’s built-in humidifier and left-right rotating outlet and accept water-bottle and monthly filter/humidifier care; Cherry and Walnut are finish alternatives.

The main tradeoff

The manual documents left-right outlet movement but no angle. The humidifier requires distilled water and monthly cleaning. Cherry/Walnut are finish-only variants, not different modes; do not use the furniture-style cabinet as a tabletop.

Is the 12-hour timer an auto-off countdown?

Yes. It stops a running heater after a one-to-twelve-hour countdown and is not a later start.

The Dr. Infrared Heater DR-998 is a portable 1,500-watt heater sold in Cherry (SKU DR-998) and Walnut (SKU DR-998W) finishes. The U.S. product pages show two distinct wood-look appearances, while the manufacturer links both to the same DR-998 owner’s manual. The operating distinction from a simpler cabinet heater is its combination of a separate humidifier assembly and a button that rotates the air outlet left and right.

A moving outlet and a water reservoir

The DR-998 manual calls this a rotatable air outlet and labels its control OSC. Pressing that control moves the outlet left and right. The manual does not give a numerical sweep angle, so there is no basis for promising a particular arc or comparing it with a model whose manual publishes degrees. The movement may help distribute a stream over a wider seating area than a fixed outlet, but it is not whole-room coverage in every direction and does not overcome closed doors or drafts.

The humidifier is removable and supplied with a bottle of up to 500 milliliters. Dr. Infrared instructs owners to use distilled water and to make sure the bottle connector and seals are fitted properly to prevent leakage. The assembly needs to be installed on its rear hooks and connected to the heater. Monthly cleaning is specified. That care adds steps beyond wiping a cabinet or vacuuming a filter; if you prefer a maintenance-light heater, select another model without this water feature. A small reservoir is also not a substitute for a room humidifier with capacity sized to a whole space.

The heater itself has two heat settings: 1,000 watts on LOW and 1,500 watts on HIGH. ECO selects between the high and low stages in response to the thermostat. These figures identify the documented input settings, not measured warmth at a distance or a claim of energy savings. A separate fan-only mode is not documented, so the blower should be understood as part of heating rather than an independent summer airflow function.

Timer, filter and fit

The remote duplicates the control-panel functions, and the countdown timer can be set from one to twelve hours to turn off a running heater. No delayed-start function is documented. A countdown is a convenience for winding down a session; it does not override the manual’s cautions about operating the heater unattended. The DR-998 also has a removable rear electrostatic filter that the manual says to clean monthly or when dust is visible. Its humidifier needs a separate monthly cleaning routine, so there are two maintenance points to keep in mind.

The manual specifies 120 volts, 60 hertz, 1,500 watts and maximum continuous current of 12.5 amps. The cord uses a grounded three-prong plug and the manual says to connect to a grounded wall outlet. Plug the heater directly into the outlet; do not use an extension cord or relocatable power tap. Keep combustibles at least three feet from the front and away from the sides and rear. Set the cabinet on a dry, firm, level floor; the wood-style finish does not turn the heater into furniture or a safe table.

Safety and model-specific limits

The manual says not to use this model outdoors, in bathrooms, laundry areas or similar locations, or where it could fall into water. A humidifier built into the appliance does not mean the heater is waterproof or approved for wet placement. Tip-over and thermal cutoffs are protections for abnormal conditions, not substitutes for the prescribed clearances. Keep the water assembly and power cord away from traffic and from places where a child or pet might pull on them.

Neither exact product page nor the shared model manual establishes a number for the outlet’s swing angle. For this reason the article and matcher record horizontal movement without a numeric maximum. The Cherry and Walnut finishes are the only confirmed difference between the observed SKUs; the manual does not describe different heat settings or controls for the Walnut version.

Who should consider the DR-998?

The DR-998 family makes sense if you want a cabinet-style portable heater, an included remote, a timed shutoff, selectable 1,000- and 1,500-watt heating and a left-right rotating outlet, and you accept distilled-water and filter maintenance. Choose Cherry or Walnut on appearance and verify the exact SKU when shopping. Compare the DR-968H if the built-in humidifier matters but outlet rotation does not; consider the standard DR-968 if you would rather skip the reservoir. The DR-978 offers a related two-stage system with its own nighttime controls.

This is an assessment of the documented product and exact model manual, not a hands-on test. No independent noise, humidification, temperature-uniformity or electrical-safety measurements were made.
