Dr. Infrared Heater DR-218 Greenhouse Heater (1500 W / 120 V) review

The DR-218 is a greenhouse/workshop heater sold in materially different configurations. This exact DR-218-1500W variant is 120 V and 1,500 W with a NEMA 5-15 plug; the manual describes High, Low and fan-only operation, a 32–104°F thermostat, and indoor greenhouse/workshop use.

A useful fit for

A dry indoor greenhouse or workshop where a conventional 120 V NEMA 5-15 connection, fan-only option and adjustable thermostat are useful. Keep the unit on a stable floor, preserve the three-foot front clearance and do not use it outdoors, in a bathroom or near water.

The main tradeoff

This is the 120 V/1,500 W version, not the separate 240 V/3,000 W model. The manual does not provide numeric Low-stage wattage, and it calls for a dedicated outlet/circuit without extension cords or power strips. Choose only after checking the exact variant nameplate and work-area wiring.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Does the 120 V DR-218-1500W have a separate fan-only mode?

Yes. The exact family manual lists High, Low and Fan Only; the variant page names 120 V/1500 W and NEMA 5-15.

May this variant be used outdoors?

No. The manual limits this exact heater family to indoor greenhouse/workshop use and says not to use outdoors.

Does the maximum input stay under a 1,500 W cap?

Yes for this exact variant. The 120 V DR-218-1500W configuration is rated 1,500 W maximum.

The Dr. Infrared Heater DR-218-1500 is the 120-volt member of the DR-218 greenhouse/workshop heater family. It is not the same electrical configuration as the 3,000-watt DR-218-3000. The exact collection variant and manual identify 1,500 watts at 120 volts and show the standard NEMA 5-15 plug, making this the more accessible option when the intended enclosed space has an appropriate grounded 120-volt outlet.

Fan-forced heat with a real fan-only setting

The manual gives this configuration High, Low and Fan Only settings, plus a mechanical thermostat with a 32-to-104-degree Fahrenheit range. It lists 1,500 watts maximum but does not name the Low-stage wattage. The fan-only mode moves air without heating; it is distinct from fanless radiant warmth. A buyer who needs a documented wattage cap for Low should not assume a value. The unit’s controls are simple, but there is no app schedule or remote listed in the manual.

Its own design context is a greenhouse, garage or workshop—not a claim that it can evenly heat any size bedroom. The manual says not to use it outdoors, prohibits bathroom/laundry use and says not to leave it unattended in a confined space around infants or people with reduced capabilities. It calls for a flat, dry floor surface and three feet of clearance from the front of the heater, with furnishings and other materials kept away from its sides and rear. It also says not to use extension cords or relocatable power taps. The greenhouse product title should not be read as permission for a wet or open-air location.

Choosing the 120-volt variant

The native product page describes the 1500W version as a 120-volt NEMA 5-15 model. The manual’s grounding section also identifies 120 volts; its FAQ says the 1500W version should use a grounded 120V 15-amp-or-higher receptacle. It is a plug-in floor heater with its own thermostat and fan; the review does not treat it as a hardwired installation. Give it its own circuit and follow the nameplate rather than combining it with another large load.

This may work for an indoor greenhouse or utility area where fan-driven heat and a familiar 120-volt plug are priorities. It is not a fanless heater, a bathroom model or an outdoor patio appliance. Since there is no exact room-size performance test here, size the heater using the room’s real insulation, drafts and plant or work requirements—not the product title alone.

Compare functions, not just watts

The DR-298 is another 1,500-watt Dr. Infrared model, but it is a fanless carbon infrared heater with three output settings and floor/wall/ceiling arrangements; its manual conditionally permits outdoor use with GFCI, while DR-218’s manual says not to use outdoors. If you need fan-only airflow, DR-218-1500 has the documented mode; if you want radiant heat without fan-driven air, consider the DR-298’s distinct plan. For a normal household room with an exact low-stage wattage known, the DR-968’s manual specifies a 1,000-watt Low setting but calls for a different indoor floor setup and three-foot clearance.

There are no grounds to assume DR-218-1500 can use the DR-218-3000 wiring or vice versa. The 1500W version is the 120-volt NEMA 5-15 configuration; the 3000W version requires a dedicated 240-volt supply and NEMA 6-20 connection. Check the exact label before selecting or installing either variant.

The manual also asks users to keep the rear air intake clear and clean the filter if airflow diminishes. That is a practical greenhouse detail: pollen, dust or potting debris can collect around a heater faster than in a tidy living room. Check the intake as part of the setup routine rather than pushing the unit close to a wall, shelf or plant bench. The manual gives no numeric rear clearance here, so do not substitute a guessed measurement for the exact instructions.
