Setup and safety

Set up and use the Lasko 5165 tower heater

This walkthrough applies only to the Lasko Digital Ceramic Tower Heater whose nameplate identifies model 5165. Lasko's current US page lists the White single-variant SKU as 5165. The linked operating guide is Rev. C 5/13; do not transfer these instructions to another Lasko tower simply because its shape and controls look similar. The heater is for residential supplemental heat, not a primary heating system or an industrial/commercial installation.

Choose the location before plugging in

Use the 5165 indoors in a dry room only. Its manual says it is not intended for bathrooms, laundry areas, wet or damp locations, outdoors, agricultural settings or hazardous locations. Set it upright on a firm, level floor. Do not place it on a bed, thick carpet or another soft surface that can block an air opening. Lasko specifies at least three feet between the front of the heater and combustible materials such as curtains, bedding, paper or furniture, plus at least one foot at each side and the rear. This is the operating space around the heater, not its body size.

The current product page lists a 22.75-inch body and a square base a little over eight inches wide. The manual's larger clearances still govern. Route the cord out of a walkway and away from rugs, not beneath a carpet or where furniture can rest on it. If the space cannot preserve those distances, choose another location or heater rather than relying on the narrow footprint.

Check the outlet and start the heater

The instructions call for a 120-volt wall receptacle and a snug plug fit. Plug the heater directly into the wall. Do not use an extension cord, power strip, surge protector, multiple-outlet adapter, cord reel or another cord-connected device. Stop using the heater if the plug, cord or receptacle is damaged, loose or becoming hot; the manual advises qualified electrical help for a faulty receptacle.

After placing the heater safely, press Power. It starts on High, which the manual identifies as 1,500 watts. Press the heat control to select Low when you prefer the lower heat setting. Lasko lists a 900-to-1,500-watt output span, but the inspected materials do not say which exact wattage is assigned to Low. The automatic temperature function works only on High; a set room target will cycle the heat off about two degrees above the setting and restart about one degree below. It cannot be set for automatic temperature control while operating on Low.

Use oscillation and the countdown for what they do

Press the oscillation control to move the outlet side to side, or press it again to stop the sweep. The guide does not publish the angle, so do not use a specific degree value to plan coverage. The 1-to-8-hour timer counts down while the heater is running and turns it off when the time expires. It does not schedule a later start from the off state. The remote works like the buttons on the unit, but needs two AAA batteries, which are not supplied.

The unit's fan can run for roughly fifteen seconds after thermostat control stops the heating element. This short cooling interval is normal and does not mean the model has a fan-only setting. The instructions say to unplug the heater when it is not in use and not to leave it operating unattended. Follow the manual rather than treating a timer or built-in protection as a reason to leave it running without supervision.

Clean, reset and store it safely

Before moving, cleaning or servicing the 5165, turn it off, unplug it and let it cool. Lasko recommends vacuuming the intake grilles every two weeks, using a soft brush for dust that remains and wiping the body with a soft cloth. Do not immerse the heater, put it near water, spray cleaner into it or take it apart. The manual says some feet may mark certain furniture or wood floors, so check the surface before placement.

If the thermal-overload protection switches the heater off, unplug it and wait ten minutes for cooling before resetting. Check that the air openings are clear and that the unit is not crowded. If it repeatedly cuts out, stop and contact Lasko service rather than bypassing a safety feature. Store it in its original carton in a cool, dry place with the instructions.

For product tradeoffs and documented alternatives, see the Lasko 5165 assessment and the broader placement and outlet guide. Room coverage and quietness are manufacturer claims; they have not been independently measured here.
